چکیده

We have developed a new photomultiplier tube (PMT) with high sensitivity for a wavelength-shifter fiber readout of plastic scintillators. Improvements of the photoelectron yield were made on a 2-in. PMT (Hamamatsu R329) by adopting (1) a prism-shaped photocathode, (2) an extended-green photocathode material, and (3) an optical mirror surface of the electrodes. As a result, the number of photoelectrons obtained by the new PMT has increased to be 1.8times that by R329. Other PMT characteristics, such as uniformity of sensitivity, time response and darkcurrent are not so much different from those of R329 for practical applications. r 2003 Elsevier B.V. APD Arrays for Scintillating Fiber Readout

An investigation is underway to determine the feasibility of planar processed, high gain, silicon avalanche photodiode arrays as a readout mechanism for scintillating fibers (SCIFI). Avalanche photodiode (APD) arrays are a compact and rugged alternative to photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). Since SCIFI usually yield a small number of photons compared with bulk scintillators, one goal of this investi...

Glass Bead Calorimeter and Fiber Optic Readout

Large volume calorimeters are traditionally based on construction from high-density material or a “sandwich” construction of alternating layers of active and passive material. Dense scintillating material, made from materials such as BGO or lead-glass, is too costly to be used on a very large scale. In sandwich technology, energy resolution is often reduced due to a large fraction of the signal...

BGO readout with photodiodes as a soft gamma-ray detector at −30◦C

BGO is expected to be plausible devices for soft gamma-ray detectors, because of a high detection efficiency for soft gamma-rays. Here we report on the good performance of BGO readout with PIN-photodiode or avalanche photodiode as a soft gamma-ray detector. We confirmed that the signal output of BGO becomes comparable to that of GSO when it is readout with photodiodes due to better matching bet...

Detection Properties of a Neutron Counter Based on Scintillator, Wavelength Shifter, and Photomultiplier

A simple neutron counter based on a scintillator strip, a wavelength shifter rod, and a photomultiplier was constructed in order to compare the properties of such a detector to a commercially available He counter. A calculation of the number of photons per absorbed neutron shows that with the bright Li Gd (11BO3)3 scintillator, light levels should be sufficient to perform pulse height discrimin...

Fast temperature spectrometer for samples under extreme conditions.

We have developed a multi-wavelength Fast Temperature Readout (FasTeR) spectrometer to capture a sample's transient temperature fluctuations, and reduce uncertainties in melting temperature determination. Without sacrificing accuracy, FasTeR features a fast readout rate (about 100 Hz), high sensitivity, large dynamic range, and a well-constrained focus. Complimenting a charge-coupled device spe...
